Finding the odds in Online Sports betting industry

One of the most important thing when you foray into the world of online betting is to get acquainted with the different types of odds and the way in which they operate. Here is the list of popular formats being popular to represent the odds globally in online sports betting:

American/ Moneyline Odds

As the name suggests, American Odds are very popular with sportsbooks in the United States. American sports betting odds work differently for favorites and underdogs.

For underdogs:

The American odds for betting on an underdog work by showing how much you would win if you risk $100. If the odds offered on a particular event result are +260, it means that in order to 'win' $260 you would need to bet $100. So if your team is an underdog in their upcoming game, and the sportsbook is offering odds of +260, it means that if you bet $100 on them to win the game you would get the following back when they win - Your original bet of $100 plus $260 winnings for a total collect of $360.

For favorites:

These type of odds for betting on a favorite work by showing how much money you would have to risk in order to win $100. If the odds offered on a particular event result are -110, it means that in order to 'win' $100 you would need to bet $110. For example, your NFL team is the favorite and are paying -120 to win their game this weekend. If you placed a $120 bet on them and they win, you would receive $100 winnings, plus get your original $120 back for a total of a $220 payout.

If you see the letters PK alongside the odds offered on a game, it means that there is no favorite and you should "Pick" the winner of the game without any points spread.

British/ UK/ Traditional/ Fractional Odds

Also being known as British Odds, UK Odds or Traditional Odds, Fractional Odds are popular in the United Kingdom and are also often used in horse racing.

Fractional odds quote the net total that will be paid out to the bettor, should they win, relative to their stake. For example odds of 5/1 imply that the bettor stands to make £100 on a bet of £20. If the odds are 1/5 the better will make £4 from a £20 stake. The bettor will also always receive their stake back, so a successful bet of £20 at 5/1 will actually pay out £120 - which is £100 plus the return of the original £20 bet.

Decimal Odds

Decimal Odds are most popular in Europe, Australia and Canada, and are the easiest to understand. They are sometimes known as European Odds in the UK.

Decimal odds are different from fractional odds in that the bettor must first part with their stake in order to make a bet. The figure quoted is the exact amount that will be paid out if the bet is a winner. Decimal odds are essentially equivalent to the decimal value of the fractional odds, plus one.

For example, if the decimal odds are 2.00 and you bet $100, the winner will receive $200 in total if the bet wins. (2.00 x $100).

Tips to become a winning sports bettor

Sports betting can be fun and an interesting hobby for someone who enjoys sports and possess knowledge about the games. Doing for fun is not  a problem, but it takes a greater bit of insight and the preparation coupled with a deep knowledge of the sports and self -discipline in order to bring the money into your court instead of losing it to the competitors'.

Here are few tips which will help to unleash that talent inside you and make you a winning bettor:

Pick up your Specialization:

The beginners in the filed find it an interesting venture and generally try their luck in a series of sports. But in case of taking it to a professional level, it has been observed that the most profitable sports bettors pick 1 or 2 sports and try to develop their specialization into those sports. As you go on with the betting exercises and get a bearing of the activities, you will find that there are few sports which are more profitable than the others. Hopefully you can specialize in a sport you love but if you find a system that works in a sport you are not passionate about you will soon fall in love with it after a few big wins in cliffhanger matches.

Develop a system and do the research:

To become a seasoned and expert on betting sports, it is highly recommended to device a system or betting selections and a staking plan. This will help in analyzing the outputs there by saving from disastrous outcomes at times too. With past sporting results and odds available online you can back test your ideas for systems or test out systems in real time by paper trading. Paper trading is writing down your bets but not actually placing them and then looking over the results of what would have happened if you had have placed them. For real time testing we think you are better off actually making the bets but starting at the sportsbook’s minimum stake of $2-$5.

Practice Self-discipline:

You need to be in control and stick to the code of rules to avoid making common and repeated mistakes.

·  Only bet on team sports
·  Only bet when undistracted and able to concentrate
·  Never bet on something because you want it to happen
·  Only bet within a system, never bet for the sake of betting or for fun
·  Only bet amounts that you can afford to lose
·  Always research before betting
·  Place bets at least 5 minutes before the dead line

Mange your funds:

Always keep a tab on the betting account of yours. It is generally the amount of money available to your for betting. It need not be your total account balance. The staking plan is almost as important as the bet selections you make. You can choose to stake a certain amount per selection and let the odds decide your potential winnings or you can choose to win a certain amount per winning selection and let the odds decide your stake.

Card Counting and its Detection in BlackJack

What is card counting?

Blackjack players use the card-counting system when they want to tip the balance off odds in their favour. The card counters run a count of the score and keep it in their heads. They attach a zero, negative or a positive value to each card as it is dealt out by the dealer.

How does the technique work?

The high cards, which are tens through aces work in favour of the player and alternatively the low cards other than the ones mentioned, favour the dealer. When the players count the cards mentally, they are able to keep a track if there are more high cards or low cards left in the deck with the dealer. If there are more high cards left in the deck, the deck is now statistically more favourable to the player. Now, the players can increase the bet size because of a ‘hot’ deck. With the use of this system, a player is able to gain advantage of a minimum of 1% over the house.

What is the origin of the card counting technique?

An American mathematician by the name of Edward O. Thorpe wrote a book titled, “Beat the Dealer” in 1962. In this book, he first made this technique public. The book immediately caught on and had hordes of budding card counters rush to Vegas and hot tail the book with variable degrees of success.

Is card counting legal?

Card counting is not illegal, but a casino would do everything in its power to prevent the players from employing this technique to their advantage. If they suspect anyone of doing so, they would ban the player from the casino. But the casino cannot confiscate players’ chips or detain players on basis of this as there has been no crime committed.

How does the card counting detection works?

There are two forms of card counting devices. Let us look at both of them:

1.1. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): in this mechanism, radio tags are embedded in the casino chips, which allows the casino’s tracking system to track the chips’ movements. Thus the casino can exactly track the amount a blackjack player is betting for each particular hand, it can track the amount cashed out by a player at the gate and how much of chips are outside the custody of the casino. It is possible to tag these chips to individual players and through this mechanism; a casino is able to identify the card counters who are trying to hold out their chips in between the card-counting.

2. Computer Vision System: this is the other card counting detection device, which uses the computer vision system with facial recognition software. The principle behind this mechanism was identifying the card counters as these players enter the casino and move through it. Or alternatively they can also be spotted by the methods of their play at the tables. To spot a suspecting method, an overhead stereo camera is used which can identify the value of cards along with the chips of the players. This stereo camera makes the use of contour analysis along with template matching and a scale –invariant feature transform algorithm.
